Alphaliner has identified additional carriers that will be avoiding the Suez Canal on eastbound voyages from Europe to Asia and instead opt for the longer route via the Cape of Good Hope. Ships on at least three US East Coast to Asia services are also taking the route back via the Cape to avoid paying Suez Canal tolls. A combination of low oil prices and a surplus of inactive vessels has made the detour a viable option for shipping lines.
